The Gaudium School celebrated International Yoga Day on 22nd June, 2020, Monday, from 7 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. virtually. The participants included the geckos and their parents from the entire school. The participants were divided into 4 groups, two groups consisting of geckos from primary grades and two groups consisting of geckos from middle and higher school.  The session started with the welcoming of the parents and an introduction on yoga. Since the theme of this year’s International Yoga Day is ‘Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family’, the entire Gaudium family connected virtually and practiced yoga at the safety of their homes along with their families. It was stressed that in the wake of this ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic, practicing yoga is very crucial for one’s mental health, physical fitness and in combating this situation.

The virtual session was conducted as a part of our developmental pillars viz stakeholder engagement and also mindfulness and wellbeing. The difference between yoga asanas and exercises was also explained to the participants. The various benefits of yoga included points like enhancing flexibility, boosting self-confidence, improving balance, reducing stress, fostering mental calmness, and many more were demonstrated during the session. After the brief introduction, some teachers along with the Physical Education teachers performed the yoga asanas starting with a basic warm-up routine, followed by ‘Surya Namaskar’ or the Sun salutation comprising of 12 powerful yoga poses. Following that, the parents were taken through a set of yoga asanas particularly Utkat asana or the chair pose, Trikonasana or the triangle pose and Vajrasana or the thunderbolt pose. The session was concluded with the demonstration of ‘Pranayama’ or breathing exercises and explaining its significance to the human mind and body.

The event was wrapped up with a vote of thanks. The team expressed their gratitude to the Director, Ms. Kirthi Reddy, the entire Gaudium team for their support, the sports department for their immense support in making the session a success, and finally all the parents for taking out valuable time and celebrating International Yoga Day with Team Gaudium!
