The supermarket is a large-scale retail institution specialising in necessaries and convenience goods. They have huge premises and generally deal in food and non-food articles. The products stored in a supermarket are properly packed and placed on separate racks in order to facilitate purchasing by the buyer. There is a very wide range of food and non-food products, particularly meat products, dairy products, canned food, bakery items, vegetables and other household products. The customers are to do the shopping themselves from the racks which are properly labelled and at the end of the market there is the cashier who takes the cash after weighing and checking the commodities. Usually the customers make their purchases and carry them in trolleys. Thus, the supermarkets are also known as self-service stores since the customers are to do all the purchasing by themselves without the aid of salesmen or selling assistants. They function on cash-and-carry lines and offer no credit. They are large retail organisations and are a useful channel of distribution.
STUDENT ACTION: The geckos visited the spar supermarket to experience the fruits, vegetables, clothes we use in different seasons. The geckos witnessed a wide range of products and felt the texture as well. The geckos acquired knowledge on different seasons and displayed the profile “Inquirer” and asked questions about products available in the supermarket. The geckos discussed and shared the knowledge of products as a show and tell activity.
LEARNING OUTCOME: As the “LINE OF INQUIRY” being “FRUITS AND VEGETABLES”, the geckos visited the “spar” supermarket to view the fruits and vegetables we eat to gain energy and be healthy. The geckos witnessed a wide range of products and felt the texture as well. The geckos acquired knowledge on wide range of fruits and vegetables and displayed the profile “Inquirer” and asked questions about commodities available in the supermarket. The geckos discussed and shared the knowledge of products available in supermarket as a show and tell activity.
