The traditional kitchen garden, also known as a potager (in French, jardin potager) or in Scotland a kailyaird. It is worldly wisdom that we should eat our greens. That is the way to health, and if we grow our own greens, we will have health and happiness. Kitchen gardening adds so much spice to one’s life. Nature is a SHE, none can match her in wrapping, preserving and presenting food. We appreciate all these things when we are growing food ourselves in our own backyard. We had a DIY activity as we planted our own kitchen garden and took care of it. The geckos were very excited to prepare their own kitchen garden. They sowed spinach, fenugreek, coriander seeds and onion, potato and garlic saplings. They became more responsible as they took care of the plants with a lot of warmth and enthusiasm. They were emphatic and were discussing among themselves what all they can do to take care of the plants and keep them healthy as “plant plays an important role in our lives”. We have earlier performed this DIY activity but our purpose and goal this time has been even stronger, since our Gecko’s observation skills have improved vastly on the basis of the knowledge gained in this unit. The vocabulary they used while sowing the seeds, the way they took care of the plants to provide all its essential elements, were all conscious efforts of action towards their learning.
